Reasons to contemplate overdenture implants.

An often misunderstood notion is the assumption that dentures and implants cannot coexist. Yet, there are instances where both can complement each other! Overdentures paired with dental implants offer enhanced comfort and stability, while simultaneously restoring numerous natural teeth for patients.

If the idea of an overdenture or implant-supported denture intrigues you, don’t hesitate to inquire. For instance, explore the possibility of replacing as many teeth as feasible with dental implants, without necessitating a complete set of dentures. Our skilled dentists are eager to discuss all potential pathways and options with you.

How do implant-supported overdentures function?

Implant-supported overdentures offer numerous advantages compared to conventional dentures, notably enhanced stability and comfort. The process of implant-supported dentures involves strategically positioning implants within your jawbone, creating anchor points for artificial teeth attachments.

Periodic visits to a proficient cosmetic dentist are essential to ensure optimal functionality. During these appointments, your dentist will assess your gum health, addressing any inflammation or potential denture-related concerns. If necessary, they may conduct minor procedures like laser treatments to enhance gum health and appearance.

Furthermore, your skilled dentist can securely affix new teeth in place using composite resin material, providing lasting results and an improved oral aesthetic.

How are implant-supported overdentures placed?

Implant-supported overdentures are secured using clasps along the gum line and are stabilized by the adjacent teeth. Typically, these overdentures consist of two main components: a base and a pontic, which is the artificial tooth.

The base is positioned beneath the gum tissue, close to the remaining natural teeth, and serves as a foundation for either a fixed or removable prosthesis (the artificial tooth). If you possess your natural teeth but require a full upper or lower denture, an implant-retained overdenture could be a suitable solution.

At Blu Dental Implant Supported Dentures, we offer a range of treatment options that encompass implant-supported overdentures and comprehensive guidance on dental implant procedures.

Post-Operative Guidelines for Dental Implant Care

Proper care of your mouth after a surgical procedure is crucial for effective healing. Some swelling, discomfort, and bleeding are normal after the procedure. To reduce these effects, please adhere to the following instructions:

Swelling and Bleeding Management

Following the insertion of a dental implant, it’s common to experience bruising and swelling. The most pronounced swelling usually occurs within the initial 48 hours post-surgery and might persist for several days. To manage swelling, apply ice packs externally on your cheek for 15 minutes followed by a 30-minute break. It’s normal to have some blood in your saliva during the first couple of days. Apply gauze or a moist tea bag with gentle pressure for 10-15 minutes to control bleeding. If bleeding persists or is excessive, please contact our office for assistance.

Brushing and Rinsing Instructions

Continue your regular teeth brushing routine, ensuring your mouth remains clean during your recovery. However, exercise caution around the surgical site where the dental implant was inserted. Refrain from using water picks and electric toothbrushes for the first two weeks after surgery. Starting the day after the procedure, rinse your mouth twice daily with warm salt water. Refrain from vigorous rinsing to prevent any disturbance to the surgical area.

Prescription Medication Instructions

In case you were prescribed an antibiotic, begin taking it immediately following your surgery as per the prescribed dosage. Always complete the full course of antibiotics as directed.

For pain management, if a prescription was provided, adhere to the given instructions. Make sure to fill the prescription promptly and take the medication exactly as directed before the local anesthesia wears off. While using prescribed pain medications, do not engage in activities such as driving, operating machinery, or consuming alcoholic beverages.

If a pain prescription was not provided, you can take over-the-counter medication (such as aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) according to the label instructions. Avoid taking any medications on an empty stomach to prevent nausea.

Suture Care Instructions

If sutures were used, it is necessary to schedule a follow-up appointment in 10 days for their removal. Sutures do not dissolve naturally, so attending this appointment is crucial. Please refrain from manipulating your implant or caps with your tongue.

Dietary Guidelines

Proper nutrition plays a vital role in the healing process. Initially, you might need to stick to a liquid or soft diet, which could include items like yogurt, pudding, Jell-O, soup, ice cream, eggs, or instant breakfast. When eating, make sure to chew on the side of your mouth opposite to the implant surgical site.

Things to Avoid

For the initial 24 hours following implant surgery, refrain from consuming spicy foods, carbonated beverages, and alcohol. Avoid using a straw for the subsequent seven days after the procedure. It is advisable to refrain from smoking until the implant site has fully healed.
